The Rocket League is that game that I play when I am bored and had no game in mind to play. That’s one of the reasons I've not been consistent with it for years.

Recently, I decided to put in much time in playing it, but only to notice something. While the competition has become tough, I realised that the number of players has reduced drastically.

What do you think has made a couple of players leave the game?

Rocket League’s one of those games a lot of people dip in and out of rather than fully stick with.

I don’t think the playerbase has completely dropped off, but it’s definitely changed. A few things probably play into it:

  • The skill ceiling’s gotten mad high if you’re not grinding regularly, it’s easy to feel left behind
  • A lot of casual players moved on to newer games or trends
  • Some people got put off when it went free-to-play — smurfing, matchmaking, that sort of thing
  • Updates haven’t really felt “fresh” enough for long-time players

That said, it still feels pretty alive when you’re actually queuing, especially at peak times. Might just be more of a hardcore playerbase now rather than casuals.

What rank are you playing at now?

Not really my kind of game if I'm honest. Tried it a couple of times but the ceiling on it is pretty high and I don't have the patience for it after a long job. If you're already into it though I'd imagine it's still worth it.

Yeah still worth it if that style of game appeals to you. The skill ceiling is what keeps it alive honestly -- there's always something to work on. Coming in fresh can feel brutal but once it clicks it really does click. Just be patient with the early ranked grind.

I got into it because its been a game that brings the competitive side of me with regards to playing against the best guys in the game. I still like the experience, but the drop in active players kinda got me thinking what must have went wrong.
